Visit Teno Alto

Teno Alto is most often visited as part of one of the many superb walks that dot the northern part of Tenerife. Teno Alto is both a region and a village high up in the Teno mountains. From here there are fantastic views over the El Palmar valley.

Explore Teno Alto and the Teno mountains

The Teno mountains are in the northwest of Tenerife and are one of the most remote areas on the island, also one of the most beautiful. We cannot recommend enough a walk in this area and this can be particularly nice in the spring when the hills and valleys are covered in wild flowers.

A popular walking route to Teno Alto is from El Palmar. This is a steep climb but the scenery you pass is stunning and well worth the exertion. If it is not too cloudy you can see Mount Teide behind the Teno mountains.

Another track leads from Teno Alto and goes to Las Cuevas (caves) and on to Las Casas and Punta de Teno which is in the middle of the Natural Park of Teno.

On the way you not only pass dramatic countryside but also 'tagoros' which were meeting places of the ancient 'Guanche' tribes and at Punta de Teno there are fabulous views over the coast and the lighthouse of Teno.

Teno Alto is well known for its goat cheese and so you can stop at Teno Alto or Los Bailaderos to pick up some goat cheese for your picnic. You will more than likely spot a herd of goats at some point of your walks in this area.

The Teno mountain area can be found in the northwest of Tenerife and is a volcanic formation that was fundamental to the forming of Tenerife. The series of cliffs ends dramatically with a sheer drop to the sea at Los Gigantes. The fertile volcanic soil and high climate means that the mountains are covered in a Laurel forest which is a kind of sub-tropical forest. The beautiful twisted trees offer many a photo opportunity.

Also in the Teno mountains is Masca which is considered to be the most beautiful village in Tenerife and indeed in all the Canary Islands. The pretty town of Los Silos which has good examples of typical Canarian architecture can be found on the northern side of the Teno Alto area.

If you are looking to do some more walking the Anaga Country Park on the other side of the island near to Santa Cruz de Tenerife is another beautiful area and is a UNESCO bioshpere reserve.
