Out and About in Tenerife

beach at las vistas, tenerife

Tenerife is wonderful to explore, offering very diverse landscapes. Locally, Los Cristianos is an interesting little town - having grown from a sleepy fishing village it still retains a Canarian feel, with an attractive church square and mainly pedestrianised streets of local shops. At night the town centre becomes alive as everyone shops and eats at the numerous restaurants catering for all tastes usually outside with tables spilling on to the pavements. It is smaller and quieter than it’s Las Americas neighbour.

There is a beach in the town by the harbour, but one of the best beaches in the south of the island is Las Vistas beach on the other side of the port –this is a large crescent shaped 'blue flag award' beach of golden sand imported from the Sahara, adjoining a very pleasant promenade leading all the way into Playa de Las Americas and beyond to the newer area of Costa Adeje.

There is a very popular large open market held every Sunday by the Arona Gran hotel on the front at Los Cristianos.

Numerous excursions are available both from Los Cristianos and Puerto Colon harbour:

the ferry from Los Cristianos to the neighbouring island of La Gomera; excursions to the incredible Mount Teide (the highest mountain in Spain); fabulous whale and dolphin boat trips; days out in the capital Santa Cruz; Puerto de la Cruz in the lush north of the island, where the world famous award winning Loro Park is situated; Siam Park, largest water park in Europe, is now open.

Also don’t miss the short trip to Jungle Park (with free bus from local points). Set in a lovely position high in the hills behind Los Cristianos it has amazing free flying birds of prey displays, parrot shows, jungle walk and much more.

The Costa Adeje Aqualand has a dolphin show that is said to be the best in Europe and the new Siam Park behind Las Americas is due to open shortly.

Golf courses are dotted around the whole of South Tenerife and we will happily send further details of them all. Tenerife is referred to as the “Island of Eternal Spring” with every good reason. The island really has a lovely climate, usually with sunny days similar to an English spring or summer even in the height of the winter months. Many northern Europeans choose to spend their winters in Tenerife - and at around a 4 hour flight time from the UK there is no need to travel long haul for the sun. As you can see from the chart (based on an average over 5 years), it really is a year round destination.

Although owned by Spain and having the Euro as their currency, the Canary Isles have special duty free status so wines, spirits, tobacco and perfumes are all cheaper. It is far cheaper to purchase your duty frees locally before leaving for home rather than purchasing at the airport.
